In this latest episode of the Concilio x Kanda Better Places podcast, Nick Dines and Phil Rodgers, political correspondent at the Cambridge Independent, discuss the outcome of the recent elections in Cambridgeshire.
A major headline from the conversation is the Labour Party’s loss of overall control on Cambridge City Council, where they dropped from 23 to 17 seats. The Green Party emerged as a significant force, gaining six councilors and successfully unseating the council leader in Petersfield Ward.
These results leave Cambridge in a state of “no overall control,” necessitating a coalition or a minority administration.
In contrast, the Liberal Democrats achieved a near-sweep in South Cambridgeshire, securing 43 out of 45 seats whilst Hunts will likely continue with a ‘rainbow coalition’, with the Conservatives and Reform making up the opposition.
Nick and Phil also discuss the upcoming Local Government Reorganisation, with Phil explaining that four options are currently being considered to replace the existing county and district councils with either two or three new unitary authorities.
The podcast is a must listen for anyone looking to understand politics in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough!
