Cllr Stephen Cowan: Hammersmith and Fulham’s Industrial Strategy
In the latest episode of Our Better Places podcast, we were delighted to be joined by Councillor Stephen Cowan, leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council.
Stephen shared insights into his journey as a leader, the borough's transformation, and the innovative strategies that have driven significant changes since he first took office in 2014.

Stephen highlighted the remarkable electoral victories, including the landslide win in 2014, followed by substantial swings to Labour in subsequent elections. He emphasized the council's commitment to delivering better value and imaginative solutions for residents, focusing on crime reduction, economic growth, and social initiatives such as free breakfast for primary school children.

The conversation delved into the borough's industrial strategy, launched in 2017, which aimed to establish a STEM innovation district, encourage enterprise, and foster public-private partnerships. Stephen discussed the evolution of this strategy and the successful collaboration with Imperial College, which has positioned Hammersmith and Fulham as a global tech hub.

Stephen's vision for inclusive growth and the importance of community engagement were evident throughout the discussion. He shared his thoughts on the future of the borough, the challenges of urban development, and the council's efforts to ensure that local residents benefit from the economic opportunities created by these initiatives.
